Super Falcons Unwavering in Pursuit of 10th WAFCON Title, Says Media Officer

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are not resting on their laurels after a crucial victory at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), as the team sets its sights firmly on clinching a record 10th continental title.

In an exclusive interview from Casablanca, the team’s media officer, Mary Akinsola shared insights into the team’s mindset, preparations, and the atmosphere in camp following their recent win.

Mary described the mood among the players and officials as “excited, but also focused,” acknowledging the physical and mental demands of their last match. “Everyone is excited, definitely, but we’re just trying to get ourselves together because it was quite a grueling one,” she said.

She praised head coach Justin Madugu for his tactical acumen and bold decision-making, particularly his unusual move to make three substitutions at halftime. “He has so much confidence in all of the girls. Any of them can be called upon at any time to make the impact he wants in a game. It was obvious yesterday when he made three bold changes at halftime, which is quite un-Nigerian,” Mary remarked.

Star striker Asisat Oshoala also received special mention for her leadership and performance on the pitch. “You can’t overemphasize the essence of a player like Asisat on the team. She’s always ready to give her best, and it was exciting to see her open the scorebooks for the Super Falcons at the WAFCON,” Mary added.

Looking ahead, Mary emphasized that the team is not underestimating any opponent, regardless of past results or reputations. “We respect all our opponents equally. We just want to go out there, match after match, with the same focus. Our eyes are fixed on the prize,” she stated.

Addressing the pressure associated with the team’s “Mission X”—the quest for a 10th title—Mary dismissed it as a source of anxiety. “It’s not pressure; it’s motivation. It fuels us to go out there and get the job done,” she explained.

On off-field matters, Mary acknowledged ongoing efforts to resolve concerns about accommodation and facilities, following social media complaints by midfielder Rasheedat Ajibade. “These issues are still being resolved via diplomatic channels. Things have changed slightly, but we expect to see more improvements,” she assured.

Mary also confirmed that the team’s spirit remains high, with all players, including Babajide Rinsola, in good condition. She thanked Nigerians for their unwavering support, saying, “We felt all the love yesterday. From camp in Portugal to Casablanca, there’s been so much support and praise. We ask Nigerians to continue believing in us, and we’ll do our best to make them proud.”

Reflecting on her own journey, Mary, who was appointed media officer just three weeks ago, described the experience as “amazing and welcoming,” expressing gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the Super Falcons’ historic campaign.

The Super Falcons are set to continue their WAFCON journey on Thursday against Botswana, determined to secure another convincing win as they march toward a potential 10th title, reinforcing their status as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.
