Afrobasket 2025: D’Tigress Set for Cameroon Quarterfinal Showdown

Nigeria’s D’Tigress will continue their pursuit of a historic fifth consecutive title at the ongoing 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket in Côte d’Ivoire when they face Cameroon in a high-stakes quarterfinal clash tonight.

Tip-off is scheduled for 10 p.m. at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan.

Cameroon booked their place in the last eight with an emphatic 85–64 victory over Angola in Wednesday’s qualification round, setting up a tantalizing encounter with the defending champions.

Nigeria, who topped their group and earned an extra day of rest, enter the tie as favorites but will be cautious of the threat posed by a determined Cameroonian side.

A Rivalry Renewed

Cameroon remains the last team to defeat Nigeria at the Women’s Afrobasket—securing a narrow 71–70 win in the 2015 semifinals on home soil in Yaoundé. Since that defeat, D’Tigress have been unstoppable, claiming four consecutive Afrobasket titles in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023, and establishing themselves as the undisputed queens of African women’s basketball.

A win tonight would keep Nigeria on course to make history as the first nation—male or female—to win five straight Afrobasket titles.

Key Matchups to Watch

To stay on track, Nigeria will need to contain Cameroon’s dynamic backcourt duo of Jessica Thomas and Joelly Emmanuelle Claude Belleka, who are averaging 16 and 15 points per game, respectively. The pair has been central to Cameroon’s high-tempo offense and pose a serious challenge to Nigeria’s typically disciplined defense.
