Lucas Moura considered quitting football after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon while playing for Sao Paulo, with the former Tottenham Hotspur forward admitting that the devastating injury and uncertainty over his contract briefly made him question his future in professional football.
The 34-year-old Brazilian suffered the injury on May 3 during Sao Paulo’s 2-2 Campeonato Brasileiro draw against Bahia. The setback occurred barely 30 minutes into his return after almost two months away from action.
Moura had previously fractured two ribs during a match against Atletico Mineiro on March 18. Having worked towards regaining his fitness, he was devastated to suffer another serious injury so soon after returning to the pitch.
Lucas Moura considered quitting football after devastating diagnosis
The confirmation that he had completely ruptured his right Achilles tendon immediately raised concerns about how long he would remain out of action.
Achilles tendon injuries can require between ten months and a year of rehabilitation, making the prospect particularly frightening for the experienced forward.
His worries were compounded by his contractual situation. Moura’s existing agreement with Sao Paulo was due to expire in December, raising the possibility that he could still be recovering when he became a free agent.
The combination of a lengthy rehabilitation period and an uncertain professional future left him questioning whether continuing his career was realistic.

Speaking in an interview with GE, Moura revealed that he thought about retirement while sitting in the dressing room after the Bahia match.
“In the heat of the moment, when I got to the dressing room, I confess it crossed my mind. Because once it was confirmed right there, what you usually hear about an Achilles tendon is that it takes ten months to a year to return. I thought: ‘My contract ends in December. Where will I be? Will I be without a club?’ That doubt creeps in.”
His admission provides an insight into the emotional impact of serious injuries on professional footballers. Beyond the physical pain and rehabilitation, players must sometimes confront difficult questions about their careers and financial security.
For Moura, the injury arrived at a particularly unfortunate moment, as he had only just returned from another spell on the sidelines.
Wife’s encouragement helped Moura overcome doubts
Moura’s initial reaction began to change after a conversation with his wife, who encouraged him to approach the situation from a different perspective.
The forward underwent surgery on May 4 at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein. The operation was performed by Dr Moises Cohen, with the initial medical assessment indicating that he would need at least six months away from competitive football.
The expected rehabilitation period was a major challenge, particularly after the disappointment of suffering another injury so soon after returning.
However, his wife’s message helped him recognise that he had an opportunity to recover and return to the game.
Recalling her words of encouragement after the operation, Moura said:
“‘Babe, imagine how many people enter a hospital not knowing if they’ll leave tomorrow. You have an injury where, in six months, you’re recovered.’ That was a wake-up call for me. We’re going to come out stronger. That flipped the switch for me. Let’s work, let’s do everything I need to do.”
The conversation changed his outlook. Instead of concentrating on the possibility of losing his place in football, he decided to focus on rehabilitation and do everything necessary to regain his fitness.
Her encouragement gave him a renewed sense of purpose as he began the demanding process of recovering from the injury.
Former Tottenham forward makes remarkable comeback
Moura’s recovery progressed faster than the initial medical assessment suggested.
The Brazilian returned to competitive action on October 10, featuring in Sao Paulo’s 2-1 league victory over Vitoria.
His comeback came just over five months after the Achilles tendon rupture, allowing him to return earlier than the initial six-month recovery estimate.
The 34-year-old has since made four appearances and scored once, offering encouragement that he can still contribute during the closing stages of the campaign.
His return represents a significant turnaround considering that he had contemplated ending his career immediately after the injury.
Rather than spending the remainder of the season recovering, Moura has managed to regain sufficient fitness to play again and is now working towards rebuilding his match sharpness.
Maintaining his fitness will be particularly important as Sao Paulo approach a demanding sequence of fixtures.
Corinthians derby awaits Lucas Moura
Sao Paulo are scheduled to face fierce rivals Corinthians on November 4, with subsequent fixtures against Fluminense and Botafogo also approaching.
The matches will provide Moura with further opportunities to gain playing time and demonstrate that he can remain an important member of the squad.
The Corinthians encounter will be particularly significant because of the rivalry between the two Brazilian clubs. Moura will hope to remain available and help Sao Paulo secure a positive result.
His performances during the closing stages of the season could also influence discussions about his future, especially with his existing contract due to expire in December.
A consistent run of appearances would strengthen his position as the club considers its options. However, his long-term prospects will depend on his fitness, performances and Sao Paulo’s plans.
Moura’s Tottenham career and uncertain future
Before returning to Brazilian football, Moura enjoyed a five-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur between January 2018 and June 2023.
He scored 39 goals in 221 appearances across all competitions during his time in north London, becoming a memorable figure among the club’s supporters.
His most remarkable contribution came during the 2019 Champions League semi-final against Ajax. Moura scored a second-half hat-trick to complete an extraordinary Tottenham comeback and secure the club’s place in the final.
After leaving England, he returned to Brazil and continued his career with Sao Paulo.
The Achilles tendon injury threatened to bring his playing journey to an abrupt end, but his recovery has given him another opportunity to compete.
His experience also highlights the psychological challenges associated with serious injuries. While medical treatment and physical rehabilitation are essential, uncertainty about contracts, employment and future opportunities can be equally difficult for professional athletes.
For Moura, the support of his wife helped him move beyond the initial shock and concentrate on returning to football.
Having gone from contemplating retirement to making a competitive comeback, the former Tottenham forward will now aim to finish the campaign strongly and establish what comes next in his career.
