Oliver Glasner criticizes VAR decision after Nottingham Forest were held to a 1-1 draw by Ipswich Town in their Premier League encounter on Friday, with the Forest manager left frustrated after Issa Diop escaped a red card for bringing down James McAtee.
The controversial incident became a major talking point in an entertaining contest that saw both teams score during a lively first half, before Forest pushed for a winner after the break.
Neco Williams gave Nottingham Forest the lead, but Ipswich responded through Julio Enciso to restore parity. Despite Forest’s efforts to reclaim the advantage, neither side managed to find a decisive goal.
Diop Escapes Red Card After McAtee Incident
The most contentious moment came when Ipswich defender Issa Diop brought down McAtee as the Nottingham Forest playmaker appeared to be through on goal.

Referee Thomas Bramall initially allowed play to continue without awarding a free kick, prompting a review of the incident to determine whether Diop had denied Forest an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
Following the VAR intervention, Bramall was directed to the pitchside monitor to review the challenge. However, after examining the footage, the referee decided to show Diop a yellow card rather than send him off.
The decision frustrated Forest, who had a potential opportunity to play against ten men for the remainder of the match. Instead, Ipswich continued with a full complement of players as the contest progressed.
The incident placed the spotlight on the referee’s interpretation of the challenge and whether the defender’s action met the criteria for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
Glasner Praises Forest’s Reaction Despite Frustration
Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, Glasner expressed mixed feelings about the performance, highlighting his satisfaction with Forest’s attacking display while acknowledging the disappointment of failing to secure all three points.
The manager believed his team had started strongly and gradually taken control before Ipswich found their equaliser.
“Mixed feelings. More positive, playing so well and we had a great start and after 15-20 minutes we were the better side and started to control the game.
“Then we made the mistake and it’s 1-1. The momentum can change but the reaction second half was amazing. We had many situations where we could score.
“I loved the reaction, the way we played and the spirit. We are moving up on performances and staying patient.”
His comments reflected a manager encouraged by his team’s progress, even though the result left Forest without the victory they had sought.
Glasner’s assessment also suggested that the players’ response after conceding was a significant positive, particularly as they continued to create opportunities in the second half.
Forest Look to Build on Improved Performances
The draw against Ipswich provided Nottingham Forest with another opportunity to assess their development under Glasner, who emphasised the importance of patience as the team seeks greater consistency.
Although the result was not the ideal outcome, the manager pointed to the team’s overall performance and fighting spirit as evidence of improvement.
Forest’s ability to create scoring opportunities after the interval offered encouragement, even as their inability to convert those situations into another goal proved costly.
The team will nevertheless need to improve its effectiveness in front of goal if it hopes to turn promising displays into victories in the Premier League.

The controversy surrounding Diop’s challenge may dominate discussion of the match, but Glasner’s post-match remarks indicated that he was also focused on the broader progress of his players.
For Ipswich, avoiding a defeat against Forest represented a positive result in a match that could easily have swung in either direction.
The teams ultimately shared the points after Williams and Enciso scored in the first half, leaving the disputed VAR decision as one of the defining moments of the encounter.
