Thomas Partey Joins Villarreal After Arsenal Exit Amid Ongoing Legal Case

Villarreal have signed Ghana international Thomas Partey on a free transfer following his release from Arsenal at the end of June.

The 32-year-old midfielder, who joined the Gunners from Atletico Madrid for £45m in 2020, will officially link up with his new teammates on Friday.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Just four days after leaving Arsenal, Partey was charged in the UK with five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman. He denies all allegations.

On Tuesday, Westminster Magistrates’ Court granted him conditional bail, requiring him to avoid contact with the complainants and to inform police of any permanent address changes or international travel plans. He is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on 2 September.

The charges follow a police investigation that began in February 2022.

Villarreal’s Position

In an official statement, Villarreal acknowledged awareness of the legal proceedings, adding:

“The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him. The club respects the principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process.”

Due to legal restrictions in England, the club said it could not comment further, but reiterated its “strong commitment to respect and diversity” and condemned all forms of violence, discrimination, and behaviour undermining human dignity.

Supporter Backlash

The signing has sparked controversy, with nearly 1,000 fans signing an online petition by the Villarreal Report protesting the move.

Partey’s arrival comes a day after Villarreal’s 3-2 friendly win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
